Prediction Friction: Killer Cookie

Vivien Chien's Noodle Shop Mysteries are always such a treat.  But I particularly savored her latest, Misfortune Cookie.  Because restaurant manager-slash-sleuth Lana Lee flees snowy Cleveland for California!  Lana is attending a restaurant convention, and her big sis Anna May is tagging along in the wake of her breakup with a married man.  Both are staying with their gracious and glamorous Aunt Grace.  But all is not blue skies and bon appetits.  Aunt Grace's bestie gets into a kerfuffle with a fortune cookie vendor only to plummet to her death.  And for once, Lana is staying out of it.  After all, she promised her detective boyfriend Adam that she'd stick to potstickers.  Yet Aunt Grace is distraught and beseeches her niece to find justice for her friend.  What's a semi-retired, amateur PI to do?  Snoop in the deceased's home office, of course.  Even if it means outsmarting a smarmy widower and dealing with law student Anna May's million objections.

Speaking of Anna May, I didn't expect to like her so much.  She's usually relegated to the background in these novels, passing judgment while Lana and her roommate Megan have the fun of solving the murders.  But being the other woman humanizes her, making her seem like less of a killjoy and more like a genuinely concerned sister.  Plus, she's smart and sassy like Lana, and her legal expertise brings a fresh perspective.  Sure, she and Lana still snipe at each other.  But they also get closer, adding depth to the story.

So, can the sisters save the day?  And what will Adam have to say?  Most importantly, will fortune cookies ever have real fortunes instead of stuff like "Keep calm and eat more fortune cookies."?!

Only that contentious cookie vendor knows for sure.  And something tells me she's not telling.

This one does look pretty darn adorable! Thanks for the wonderful review. You do have me wanting to go to stacks and see what I've missed. πŸ₯ πŸ₯ πŸ₯ πŸ₯ πŸ₯ πŸ₯  Thanks for your comments. Thanks for reading..oh, I am trying to get a few to write pool stories at a Urstyle contest. Of course, I should have written more myself since I am quite fond of pool stories, and yes, I do remember dripping in a baby oil at the pool..but that only happened once...like many things in that story. πŸ’—πŸ’—πŸ’—πŸ’—I hope the weather is doing OK there. The humidity is back with some rain.

This one definitely looks to be one to savor and the sisterhood is a plus. Sounds like a lot of fun too and add the food..YUM!πŸ’—πŸ₯ πŸ’—πŸ₯ πŸ’—πŸ₯ πŸŒΈπŸŒΈπŸŒΈπŸŒΈ I have been wondering if you all have had any flooding to worry about..but maybe that went north of you..only its never fun being down river either. One winter we had some big snows and all especially north of us. Suddenly there was a great thaw and the flooding was not fun. I know it sounds like we might be in mountain man country or something, but really it a bit hilly in places. Of course, these days weather is so unpredictable. Thanks for your comments. Thanks for reading Yuki's story. I think I've found a new faceclaim..and with a couple of others too..so hopefully, it won't be too confusing. Hope your July is going well. I am trying to make a MTM Elsa for someone because the dog ate her other Elsa. Elsa is the most ivory of skin tones.

Oh, this really looks like one that would make me smile and a page-turner too. Usually, I love the supporting cast more than the main character. I so enjoyed reading your review. I need to find this series now.🌸πŸ₯ πŸ’—πŸ§πŸ’•πŸ§πŸ’—πŸ₯ πŸŒΈ Sometimes, I think I have more happening in this story blog than I should, but still it keeps me wanting to write. Although, it might be The summer of my discontent at times. Of course, it might go places to of knowing some's true colors, too. Thanks for your comments. I always appreciate your feedback. All the best to your creativity and that growing reading list along with that beautiful wardrobe of yours.

"Misfortune Cookie" - what a clever title!! Fortune cookies, mystery and layers of characterization depth? Now that makes for a delicious read! πŸ’–
